In 700 BC Hesiod sang about the divine love of Zeus for Thyia, claiming that she got pregnant and gave birth to two children, Magnitas and Makedonas, who lived in Pieria. The sacred site of Zeus in this region is Dion, at the foot of Mt Olympus.
The twelve gods chose Olympus as their place of residence and the ancient kings of Macedonia chose Dion as their summer home.
Many centuries ago, a settlement was created there, whose ruins reveal to visitors the existence of a very important Macedonian town. The ruins of an ancient theatre, a market, baths and palaces, take visitors on a journey through a faithful representation of life at that time, to discover a marvellous civilisation. Also remarkable are the findings of tombs uncovered in the Dion area.
Today, visitors can walk around the unique archaeological park that covers 200 ha, and includes the ancient town and places of worship-temples, that were located outside its walls, and marvel at the remains of this civilisation at the archaeological site and Archaeological Museum at Dion.
